Our site currently uses an IRC widget, a real-time communication protocol that's been around for a couple decades now and has hundreds of standalone/web clients across pretty much every operating system//device.
Since the widget we use is externally linked and since we aren't hosting the IRC server itself, we don't have to worry about additional bandwidth loads that come with most in-site java/ajax messengers.
Additionally, unless it's just the 5-6 example demos I looked at, xat looks quite reminiscent of a 1998 geocities page as far as presentation goes.
