Budokai 1, Budokai 3 and Tenkaichi 2 for the win. Tenkaichi 2 is one of the best sequels for a Dragon Ball Z game in terms of improving the core game mechanics.
why not Budokai Tenkaichi 3? Because it's basically Tenkaichi 2 with some new combos and worse music (in my opinion). Also, story mode was better in Tenakichi 2.

Budokai 3 is good, I've been playing it recently on my PCSX2 Emulator. I love the story mode because you get to travel on a world map, but I still haven't figured out how to charge ki without skills or knocking the trash out of the opponent. :S
Anyway, Tenkaichi Series has a trashy storyline; they just throw you into battles without you having to see where you are in the world for the battle to take place, and the maps are just as overused as Budokai 3. :\

But yet I think in the fighting part tenkaichi games are the best whether budokai tenkaichi 1 or ultimate tenkaichi.

I remember my cousin used to tease me by not telling me how to gain ki, so I had to do combos to gain the ki, eventually learned it later on.
@Link Tenkaichi maps overused? They had more, more maps than Budokai and had day/night versions of it as well ( Tenkaichi 3)
Tenkaichi 2 story was great similar to Budokai 3. Budokai 1 for the cutscenes, loved them.

Well they reused BT2 maps in Budokai Tenkaichi 3 so yeah.
The three first Budokais all had different maps.
The cutscenes in Budokai are still awesome, they haven't aged at all, too bad the PAL version censured the blood in them.

Super Dragon Ball Z was the PlayStation 2 Dragon Ball Z game I had the most fun with it. I liked the challenge of the combos. The developing of your characters. And every character actually having unique animations/moves.
Most braindead Dragon Ball Z fans just couldn't handle that much awesome. Only gripe I could have, is that the beams/energy attacks looked like stuff. But that's probably where most fans signed off on directly without giving it a chance.
