I keep getting bone heat weighting failed to find solution for one or more bones when I try to rig my models.

This sounds like a specific problem to blender or one of its plugins. If you are creating a custom skeleton from scratch on one of the ZEQ2-lite meshes, you shouldn't have any issues using your typical weighting pipeline.
It sounds like you are either using some automated weighting process or trying to preserve the existing weight data from another file.
