I think everyone is mainly wondering what exactly you actually did. The coloring, shading bands, outlines, model, presentation style are practically the same. The textures look like you might have lightly applied a low-opacity perlin noise filter, but that's about it.
If you want to (at least partially) accomplish your thread goal better, you'll need to change the textures to remove the outlines and bake some shading or at least adjust the shading band some.
Edit : When you say realistic, in what regards are you referring? Do you simply mean soft brushes like the image below or to a much more extreme degree with lighting?

It's not a comparison to be chosen from. I don't know what the original thread creator was asking. His intended results could vary wildly from my provided examples even. I'm trying to better pinpoint which aspects of "life" he's trying to imitate.
