Wasn't a fan of the first Final Fantasy XIII, never plan on bothering with the second, and Lightning was not an interesting enough character to even warrant a third game...
To me, the series ended after 9, and every game looks the same from 11 and everything that came after. They just never were able to recapture that feel of vast open world, expansive original story, and actual character depth that came with the early games. Now everything feels like endless corridors, and virtually nothing to do on the side... Airships just haven't been the same either...

Err... Final Fantasy X was fairly linear corridors from what I recall of it, and when you finally get the air ship, you tell it where to go, it doesn't let you actually fly it... 11 and 14 don't really count as Final Fantasy games, never bothered with 12 because the visual style seemed too generic to me, but it looked to be similar to 10 in some regards.
And again, Lightning was not an interesting character. No one cares about an emotionless character, because there's no emotional attatchment that can be formed. There's no real depth to her, her voice acting reminds me too much of Trinity from The Matrix, which was a dreadfully shallow character in her own right, and I just don't understand what anyone likes about her. Seriously, I find pebbles on the side of the road more interesting as characters than Lightning was to me... In fact, I think Square had this character before, though I believe they called him Squall Lionheart... Too many overtly obvious similarities(monotone attitude, gun blade, professional soldier), Lightning becomes the less interesting one because she is less original for copying a previously created character in the Final Fantasy series...
Earlier Final Fantasy games did not have this issue in anywhere near the degree recent games have had. Granted, there were less than interesting characters in previous games, but they were generally support/side characters, and not really part of the main cast, so they were not as developed.
Personally, as I said, the last true Final Fantasy game was 9. It had the best character depth, a well developed story line, and you actually felt something for the characters as the story progressed. 10 came close to this, but the story was confusing in many respects, and was greatly hindered by its own grandeur in its overly convoluted sphere grid based leveling system. True you could eventually have your characters learn just about everything, but the grid was so darn difficult to navigate, it could quickly become overwhelming to players early on, scaring away any but the ultra hard core.
And personally, I hated the idea behind what they did with Summons in 10... I always liked the sequences they did for summon magic in previous games where they swooped in, wrought death and destruction then vanished. It just lost that luster of awesomeness when they took over for you party like the main characters were too weak to handle things on their own...
