I don't know if its because I'm new here but the the size requirements for the avatar are pretty steep. 100 x 400 and under 74kb or something like that. I don't really mind the size part but the dimensions are really hard to please. My avatar is oriented to be more wider than lengthy but I had to crop it down a bunch. Do you think you can raise the width dimension to be like 400?

The reason for the restriction to such a small image size is two-fold.
First, because smaller resolution avatar images don't break the layout of the website when you make a post, where as larger images would. A wider than current avatar, for example, would shove your actual post over to the right, and potentially off-screen if it's big enough, thus breaking the forum's standard layout and requiring you to scroll left and right in addition to up and down...
And second, to limit bandwidth usage/load times for each web page. Large images require more time to load, and if there were no limits and everyone had avatars that were like 5 megabytes each, a single page on the forums could take five minutes to load or longer depending on how slow your internet connection is.
And no, it's not because you're new, everyone is subject to these restrictions.
