Either kidgoku is actually the only female on the forums or he has some weird taste in music. Lady Gaga makes my ears bleed, he really does. Makes me wonder how the guy ever got popular
Here's the perfect song to respond to such an eclectic mix of pop in the opening posts: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yfB7vF7nCdA
On a more serious note: here's a song which is just beautiful with an glorious solo, Selkies The Endless Obsession by Between The Buried And Me: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FKQSe3TatPQ#t=4m (starting it off at 4 minutes as the first half of the song is just a tad abbrasive for some people, watch the whole thing if you want the full experience)
Amazing band, extremely talented and their versitillity shows through the variety of sounds in their music. However, that versatillity means while you may LOVE the section I linked to other songs of there's may make your ears bleed as they do get seriously heavy at times. At others the break down in to ho-downs and sea-shanties, though, so it ballances out
Lets see, some of my favourite modern bands are Gama Bomb, Evile, Mastery & Bonded By Blood, all new wave thrashers. Thrash is one of those marmite genres: it's always much of a muchness no matter where you get it from and people either like it or loath it. Personally, I love it. Check out some of their tracks:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b0uUpTpTtM0 <- Gama Bomb - Return Of The Technodrome (it's about the TMNT )
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WchZWJXqWAE <- Evile - We Who Are About To Die (about the slaves forced into gladatorial combat)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QysB5KtIeRg <- Bonded By Blood - Feed The Beast (likely about rage and anger and how it builds up)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zv6nuIKfLEM <- Mastery - Numeration (no idea, the whole album is instrumental with no vocals, it's just badass thrash )
And, why not, I'll throw in a Trivium track too: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZKfMRozeM8M - Kirisute Gomen (about samurai taking people's heads)
On the other hand, classic bands I love are like Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Testament, Megadeth, Anthrax, Flotsam & Jetsam, Exodus, Dream Theatre, Death Angel and many others along those lines.
Between the classics and the newish bands, there's stuff like Machine Head, Pantera... Uhh... come to think of it, there's not many 90's bands which I'm too keen on these days, most of it was nu-metal trash like Limp Bizkit, Papa Roach, Korn and Staind, real intellectually lacking music. Even bands which weren't *too* bad like Spineshank and Coal Chamber are pitiful compared to Silent Civilian and Devildriver which the vocalists went on to form respectively.
Certain bands from back then, such as Slipknot and Disturbed, are pretty decent these days since their musical direction have grown up, but still not bands I'd choose to listen to.

Too slam right, Burton's the man! Imagine how different Metallica would be if he hadn't died. Chances are they wouldn't have self-destructed in the 90's nor had to relearn how to play the genre they all but invented @_@

I think Nirvana's sorely overrated, but you posted my favourite track of their's so it's all good Dave Grohl was always been the best part of Nirvana in my opinion.
Any one ever check out Probot? It was Grohl's tribute to the metal bands which had inspired and influenced him. I'd post a link to a song but that wouldn't do the album justice. Each track was especially written by Grohl in the style of each of the bands with each band's vocalist singing on the relevant tracks.
It's a variety of styles all done very well. Fans of Grohl or any sort of metal should check it out.
Another good variety album is Roadrunner United, which was released to celebrate the artists, past and present, which made Roadrunner the record label it is today. Many different musicians from many Roadrunner bands collaborated in teams to write and record an album.
The songs combined various aspects of the bands who contributed to them, creating some quite interesting music. It's also worth checking out the 20th anniversary live show dvd as they not only do songs off the album with a constantly rotating lineup of musicians but also classic Roadrunner Records songs as well in a similar manner. Check it out if you like any bands signed to Roadrunner or metal in general.

You know, as big a fan as I am of Gama Bomb, I had absolutely no idea they released a new album in November, let alone that they released it for free on their label's website alongside the retail CD release. Anyone interested can grab it from here: http://www.earache.com/gamabomb/
Further awesome and deadly serious bands for your enjoyment: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sHocpDfXz1s <- Pyschostick with their heart felt ballad "Why, Oh Why?"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vdZYvPZhT1c <- Austrian Death Machine with "Get to the Choppa!", a collaborative effort between As I Lay Dying's Tim Lambasis and Ahhnuld.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nzVsm8Fyz_o&feature=fvw <- Spinal Tap with their legendary "Tonight I'm Going to Rock You Tonight"
