You can't really say that any of them is original.

Like I pointed out in an earlier thread (as did ESFER here), both are indeed based on a pretty common archetype so neither is "directly influenced" from the other in any sense as much based upon a core definition.

That said, the game styles and sub-genre of shooter that each belongs to are completely different and not nearly as relatable.

Yepp. But games like 'The Conduit" for Wii is clearly a ripoff of Halo. Or Darksiders if a ripoff of GOW, Metal Gear/Splinter Cell and lot of Grand Theft Auto and Devil May Cry ripoff..
