Improve your PC's Performance:
1.Turn off Winsat.
Winsat makes a test time after time, about your pc speed and give a score..but this process need 15-30 minute, while that process your PC is slower and the aero was turned off..
For turn off Winsat, go
Scheduled Tasks/Microsoft/Windows/Maintenance
There you can find it, just right click on it, and select Delete..
2.Disable Audio Enhancements
I recommend disabling audio enhancements on Windows Vista to help reduce the CPU usage of the audiodg.exe process. Depending on the enhancements that were enabled, this can have a large effect or no effect on the CPU usage.
Source Page and how-to:
http://technicallyeasy.net/2010/09/how-to-disable-audio-enhancements-windows-7/
3.New nvidia drivers can screw up right click menu with crash the windows explorer process, for that download and install 'ShellExView", and than you can turn off untrusted shell items.
4.don't use Microsoft Office 2007 or 2010, because 2003 used on most of workplaces, and it has small memory usage, smaller size etc..
5.For record games don't use Fraps or any kind of stuffs like this anymore, use Bandicam which is faster, have more option, and can record even windowed games like mugens!
6.Nero? You can't use full speed of your PC if you use Nero Start Smart, and it need lot of space and even the installer over 900MB, I mean the HD Deluxe blabla..If you want the best, use Ashampoo Burning Studio! I'm not recommending to use every Ashampoo product, mainly not the antyspyware but Ashampoo Burning Studio is clearly the best of all times!
This software also have a freeware version!
7.Portable or not Portable? Well..for business use non-portable softwares, for fun (icon converting, ultra iso etc..) you can use portable versions, programs what you don't upgrade for a long time..
8.Use AVG PC Tuneup 2011 with cleaning functions, but be careful! there's no optimizer software on the marked for starters! If you screw up your pc, than its your fault, not the softwares..
AVG PC Tuneup 2011 not only defrag but optimize your HDD while defrag, plus you can select auto turn off PC after defrag & optimization!
9.For protection..hm, Comodo or AVG I guess, I prefer AVG 2012 IE.
10.Browser? Well, its your choice..but if you want a fresh and fast browser chose the latest Firefox.
11.JetBoost for the win and its even freeware, if you are professional user, than this software can improve your pc speed after you logged in to windows, more than 40% extra speed! By turning off the unused services, it works..but only use it if you are pro, and only use it for gaming or any other big process like Video/Image editing..not avarage for browsing(if you turn off the firewall).
http://www.bluesprig.com/jetboost.html
12.Converter? Well, in freeware..FormatFactory! FF can convert everything..and if I say everything, it means everything! And its even looks good!
For strong nvidia cuda cards I suggest Winavi AIO software.
http://www.formatoz.com/
13.Players..hm, from the creators of KMPlayer: Potplayer! Yeah..
website: http://www.videohelp.com/tools/PotPlayer/old-versions
Faster, better quality..everything!
14.Refresh DirectX Install:
http://www.videohelp.com/tools/PotPlayer/old-versions
15.For internet based applications can use a..cloud style installer called: Ninite
http://ninite.com/
Ninite silent-install or update your softwares, so you can reduce the install time, even the after-windows-installation-nightmare procedure.
Update1:
16.If you want more speed without turning off aero, but remove the glass effect..well, download and install Windows 8 UX Pack (only the theme part - I suggest: Aero Lite!)
This is a theme, for Windows 7 ONLY! It won't need any uxtheme patch or things like that. Even if uxtheme patch not work on your Windows 7 version, this software going to work!
http://www.windowsxlive.net/windows-8-ux-pack
17.What Windows 7 version do I need?
Well, You only need Windows 7 Home Professional, that is the fastest for medium speed PC-s!
Professional..Enterprise..Ultimate..those versions vacuums and won't contain any useful stuff.
18.Utorrent..hm..if you use it(download/upload) than the games got some serious lagg/slowdown..so don't use utorrent if you play and want full speed in game, or in utorrent!
The same for every torrent client..
Update2:
-For Nvidia users, nvidia control panel settings:
drivers: http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us
-For old ATI card users, DNA ATI drivers: http://donotargue.com/category/dna-modded-drivers/
32bit or 64bit?
For 64bit you need at least 4GB of RAM!
vsync or not vsync?
Well if you can run the game you want, on full settings..than you can use vsync for disable sceen tearing, but if you play on medium-low quality turn off vsync for better quality!
pagefile?
don't change the settings of pagefile, the default setting is fine..
toolbars?
Toolbars like msn plus, it not hurts your computer but adverts, slowdowns, gathering data from your pc..

You can increase the speed if you use Windows XP, for several Games. But XP won't support DX10-11 or DX10-11 based Games.

You could also download tune up utilities. This program speeds up your computer and helps you get rid of programs you rarely use. http://www.tune-up.com/download/

I think the best is AVG PC Tuneup, that contains all the good stuffs, plus the defragmenter part has an option for turn off the computer after done.

Really you fail to mention VLC media player
As a side note. AVG is also a pretty big resource hog.
There are easier ways to avoid getting a virus.

*ponders*..you did the same mistake. there's LOT OF MEDIA PLAYERS, I just write down one I prefer that's all..
And yes AVG had big memory usage bit AVG not make laggy the PC, NOD and other softwares use less memory but cause more lagg while you use copy, paste or just browse. And it's not AVG Firewall its AVG PC Tuneup..

I was referring to the antivirus.
A firewall is pretty much lacking in identifiable function unless someone wants to pretty much hack your computer directly.

Well I got a serious virus in 2009 with Panda 2009.
So tried the best 2009version Firewalls like Kaspersky 2009, NODSC 2009 etc etc..But none of em found the virus. Than I was seen..AVG Antivirus+Antispyware 7.5 and AVG Firewall 7.5. I tried those two.
And they found and killed the virus, after I restarted my PC the virus full gone. After that I used that combo, than AVG decided to fuse those softwares and make AVG 8, than AVG 8.5, than AVG 9, than AVG 2010, than AVG 2011, than AVG 2012. So you can imagine how strong is the latest AVG, yes the latest eat..don't know 100MB of RAM but since I have 2GB, and I won't got any virus after 2009 (so its 3year clean now), and most of geeeks with Nod, Kaspersky etc got lot of viruses and hacks..and AVG users told me they won't got any virus..well, yeah that's why AVG is the best I think.
And I won't make daily HDD backup just for protect my PC, because peoples who do that, or say: oh I never get a virus without firewall well they play with fire. Daily HDD backup can't protect, it cost lot of space and you can't decide on what date you got the virus, plus you lost lot of files. Plus if the virus kill your HDD(because there's plenty hardware killer) than you can't just backup haha.
From some dollar you can buy plenty of RAM and then protect your PC with AVG. But buy a new PC or try backup your infected files because you think you know everything from old viruses..well its priceless

Just don't download stuff or visit websites you don't trust. Simple as that, I didn't get any virus for more than 4 years.
Also, doing this is only a good idea for old PC's. If you really want to get more performance, actually buy a new PC (or overclock your CPU). SSD's also gives your PC a huge boost.
Fraps has no problems for me. I only get around -5 FPS if I record while I've got a Q6600 CPU.
1. Hasn't given me any slowdowns nor problems.
3. Is also pretty untrue though, I've got a other PC that contains a 8800GTS and it still didn't give me this problem yet while it has been updated so many times.
4. Doesn't matter, if you got the newest systems around then it shouldn't give you any slowdowns.
6. Is wrong too, it didn't make my system slower yet. I think this is because I've got an SSD.
Wouldn't recommend 11. but it's okay for my line. :V
14. Doesn't have to be updated as Direct X already is at the latest version if you install newest games.
16. Only gives me 1% extra performance, lacking in identifiable function for me.
18. Is good, doesn't give me a slowdown and can be run in the background while playing. Bittorent can work too.
Also, 64-bit doesn't require 4 GB, as you can just run it with 2 GB RAM. It does run faster if you got more than 4 GB though.
V-Sync has to be off, at least for me. It runs BAD on my system. I would recommend to keep that off to others, it may give you a performance boost.
Toolbars really give you a slowdown though. at least for me.
Anyways, good work on the post though, it seems it does help a lot of people. :V

64bit memory usage double, that's why pro's say don't try it without at least 4GB of ram! And Even if dual core can handle 64bit.

Over 3 years with no antivirus installed, no firewall (disabled the windows one since its trash anyhow), router is set to DMZ(demilitarized zone) for my computer and the worst I've had was a faulty driver install due to connection problems from my Internet Service Provider side. But I can't really blame them for that. It was the construction workers that cut the cable and didn't patch it up properly >.>
I'm in no danger as long as I know what I'm doing. But here is a fun fact. No antivirus protects against all viruses. An antivirus can only detect a virus, if people got infected with the virus and sent in reports, so that the people making the AV could see what they need to look for.
AV programs are always a step behind the virus makers. So you just didn't get a new virus yet.
I do wonder what AVG would do against a ripper virus though, since the only way to get rid of it is to erase the partition its on completely. Though that virus is lacking in identifiable function on NTFS partitions as it only affects FAT32 formats. But still. Would be an interesting test *intense laughter*
And 64 bit thing. that's bogus. There is no 64 bit windows. Its all emulation. The only truly 64 bit OS is Linux at the moment (don't know what version) and only AMD uses actual 64 bit processing. Intel processors also only emulate 64 bit processing. The funny thing is since windows doesn't have real 64 bit support, the true 64 bit processors don't even get used fully. And for the RAM. 64 bit only means that you can have more than 4GB of RAM. The Computer knows how to address that. If you have less there won't be any performance hit.
The thing is windows 7 and vista use up 5 times as much RAM as XP did. that's why you think you get a performance hit on a 64 bit system. Also games require more RAM than they used to also furthering the illusion of requiring more RAM for the 64 bit system.
Final assessment.
Your entire first post is more or less fan boy-ism. Does it work?
Probably to some extent.
Is it the best?
Not likely. Chances are there are better things out there, that most people have not even heard about.

"Pro's" may say that. But if they were real pro's they wouldn't say "don't try less than 4 GB of RAM on a 64 bit Windows". It's total bull. Windows 7 @ 64 Bit is almost the same as 32 Bit (x86), the only thing is that 32 Bit (x86) can only handle around 4 GB of RAM, while 64 bit can have more than 192 GB of RAM.
The 64 Bit version only uses up around 100 MB of RAM. So there's nothing wrong if you use Windows 7 64 Bit with 2 GB of RAM.

Since you're talking about "knowledge" right now, lemme post up a quote from a good ol friend. 17:19 - StealthRider: 64bit is faster, it can calculate more, exactly 8 byte at once. it uses more ram for this and doubles the cache usage. But it will make the system faster through the more simultan calculation of code. Since Windows 7 is smart it will manage the Ram it got, 64bit runs even on 512mb ram fine, tested self
17:20 - StealthRider: *laughing out loud*, and 1-2-3gb users...
17:20 - StealthRider: because they are uninformed participators @pc and buy the stuff on a discounter
He works @ Telekom (http://www.telekom.com/home/), so I believe he knows more than you. :V
