To be honest, I'm not that impressed. The flying looks awkward somehow.

yeah but some of those particle missmatches are because of the ping difference 3 of the 5 people had 300 ping ^^
And as you know from 1.2 the effects can play bad with that.

Yeah, it looks like it'd be hard to control....if that makes any sense.

Yeah, of course it makes sense... how many people CAN'T fly an aircraft, let alone fly using Ki?

Visually spectacular? Absolutely.
Feels like Dragon Ball Z? Not so much.
Although there are a huge abuse of point lights and glow sprites here (reminds me a bit of plasma pong), the end result is colorful and plenty explosive. From what I can surmise of the existing flow of combat, it's ironically much more akin to a combat flight simulator along the lines of Armored Core or Zone of the Enders.
I thought it was a peculiar design choice that you have majority of attacks homing, but then again, this makes sense for the constant pace and state of flight acrobatics in place. Additionally, some of the of the animations are a wee bit too flamboyant / elegant for a Dragon Ball Z character (especially Vegeta) to perform, but as I realize accuracy or character portrayal isn't a fixed goal, it should fit fine in terms of lofty air combat.
Earth Special Forces certainly does look aesthetically pleasing, amusing, and like it'd be a bucket of intense exchanges -- albeit not the Dragon Ball Z experience some might expect.

300ms is plenty playable as long as you have proper client-side prediction code in place. When I was working with Naruto: Naiteki Kensei, I remember a lack of solid integration of client-side prediction code being a BIG problem. I assume this is one of the top priorities to address before release then, yes?
Regardless of the latency, you shouldn't have any visual artifacts if you are handling events in a synchronous manner.

just tell me you guys were using low settings due to the ping :p because I remember Earth Special Forces being far more beautiful than that . and the particles also seem too big especially from the beams

in the flying animation it looks like Vegeta is going to the side after a 0.5 second delay

well... I don't liked, it looks good and all of that but... I prefer the anime style, anyway like TRL said the fly stuff looks kind of bad... anyway all I can say is... the game could looks much better if you make it looks more like the cartoon and quit that realistic stuff... that's another reason why I never liked Dragon Ball Z ut...

ESFs art style is that semi realistic one. Has been since the start and it won't really change.
Zeth I don't know anything about net code so I can't really talk to you on that issue, but since we are using standard HL1 net code you can bet its outdated ^^
As for the flying its pretty much the same as in 1.2, only without a time limit to your swoop.
Press 1 button + a direction and off you go, using the mouse to steer.
