Making a game is difficult though...You should try to contribute something to this project.

This project is meant as a self study class. Something he can also achieve with trying to make his own game.
The only difference is that he will probably get help quicker and with less searching here, while when making his own thing chances are he will learn more stuff and most importantly learn how to properly self educate.
And with self educate I mean learn how to look for help across the net, not just one specific forum.

Well after reading a bit it seems that unity only supports FBX natively.
Basically if you can get a converter you can use any model you have the source files for.
Not sure how animations go.
by the way why don't you try hitting some unity related forums for possible FBX converters or compilers. They may be able to point you in a better direction than me.

FBX is a pretty common format these days in multiple engines and one that's natively supported by 3dsmax and a slew of other 3D editors. It's not my favorite format as far as compression goes, but it can be set up to include the skeleton, bone/vertex weights, morph data (although unity doesn't import/use it presently), skeleton animations, lights, cameras, and other common scene/mesh data types.
Alternatively, you can choose to place your animations in separated FBX files with a skeleton. This setup allows you to [re]use the same set of animations on any like model with a similar skeleton.
Unity also supports importing of dae, 3ds, dxf, and obj formats as is explained here.

You have to add character controller from the component tab yourself and in the project panel add custom animations to your character and then when you are done just go to your player in the heirarchy tab and choose animations in the inspector and set your values.
