Alex wrote : A lot of you seem to be under the complete miconception that the update is just about a few new characters and maps and that's all that's taking time, but that couldn't be further from the truth.

Characters and maps are just content and only a fraction of the over all work involved. It's taking time because it is a MAJOR update. The folder structure's been optimized; the "engine" and "game" source branches are being merged into a single code base; the new zMesh file format & animations system; visual tools for setting up models in the new model format are being made; hardware shader support and a much more 'modern' renderer; method of storing & accessing skill/attack data from the playerstate has completely changed; Linux support has been added; The ingame server browser is apparently now working. Those are just a selection of the purely technical changes. As far as the gameplay goes, tons of bugs are fixed, limits on the amounts of skills/attacks per character have been drastically raised, mêlée has been enhanced and new additions to the attack scripting are being done, among countless other changes made over the last 6 months.

Everything I mentioned above has been mentioned a number of times on the forums and IRC and aren't exactly "news" to anyone. Most of what I mentioned are also a huge amount of work individually and some are still under heavy development.

These changes affect the project on a far greater scale than just additional characters or maps and are a tremendous amount of additions for [you]just[/you] 6 months of work between a handful of guys doing it in their spare time. This is what I meant by people not appreciating the sheer amount of work that's being put in to the project by the few who actually contribute.

Another misconception seems to be that, for someone to contribute, they would have to either make complete characters, make maps or code. That's not all there is to it. What about attack scripting? Tier scripting? Shader scripting? Textures? Sounds? Sprites? There's tons of things which can be done if people actually want to help.

A further misconception is that if an addon's released it can't be contributed and if something's contributed it can't be released as an addon. That is far from the truth again. If people want to contribute something they don't have to "keep it" for the next release unless they specifically want to, it's up to the contributor whether they release it publicly before hand or not.

Similarly, if people actually want to help out polishing off characters which are ingame but incomplete then I can't see Brad or anyone complaining about them being pushed onto the public SVN as they get finished, same with the ton of old character models in the archives, same with the maps. Things aren't being kept "private" to keep them away from the fans, but because they're not release ready. Coding is taking priority because that work is far more important to get done. As we keep on saying, if more people helped out then those so sought after characters would probably be ready for release by now. It's not like no one in the community can tweak models, textures and attacks, is it?

With the amount of potential talent around here, a lot could be achieved if as much effort went into helping as goes into complaining about not having a new character to play with after only 6 months. The whole concept of being open to contributions from the community is NOT about being lazy and getting other people do the work, the very suggestion of such reasoning is a complete insult at best. Contributions have always been suggested along the notion of: "If you want quicker releases then help us out and contribute, there is only so much we can do in our spare time."

Though, I guess no matter how fast we work or how many hours we put in to it, people with such an attitude to it will always be complaining about things taking too long. People were complaining within a fortnight of the Public Beta 1 being released that Public Beta 2 was taking way too long. Patience seems to be a virtue lacked by most, especially the young, in this day and age of instant gratification.

Who will read that? Shocked

Anyone who has a question or complaint about progress should read all of that as well as Brad's previous posts before saying another word on the subject. It's getting really tiresome dealing with the same questions and complaints from people who don't even bother to read the answers they get given.

even Ramunas says that he is disappointed by ZEQ2 and will drop it

You have to realize that Ramunas, like most, is simply a contributor to this project. Having worked on DBSource in the past, he was never personally interested in ZEQ2-lite from the get-go. The main reason for that is simply because some of us have worked together on other more intensive and ambitious projects that would be more applicable to fueling a career -- rather than just hobbyist concepts.

The point is that it wouldn't matter if Alex, Ramunas, Dave, myself, Alain, or ANYONE got bored/tired of working on ZEQ2-lite. The design of an open-source projects means that it simply cannot fizzle and will always be able to be picked up by anyone interested 3,5, or even 20 years down the road.

Postscript : Please don't take hypothetical examples out of context.

ig·no·rant[ig-ner-uhnt]
Lacking in knowledge/understanding of a particular area.

The word is wildly misused/misinterpreted as an insult when in fact everyone in the world is ignorant to at least one subject.

Also, this is extremely off-topic and not on par with forum guidelines. Keep your pitter-patter comments in private messages or free forum threads as this thread should be just for the discussion of the topic at hand.

Zeth or MDave will close this as the see fit. There is absolutely no need for thinking in their place and telling them what to do. It doesn't make you look any better either.

Now back on topic. ZEQ2-lite is not a game.
And I am working on giving you guys a content update before the actual release of Public Beta 2.
