I played it with my PlayStation 3 controller and believe me, keyboard is waay easier

The game's designed for a mouse & keyboard, as such a skilled keyboard player should beat a skilled gamepad/joystick play with relative ease. Of course, people may find it easier to use a gamepad than a mouse & keyboard, but that's personal preference more than anything.
