Hip hop music and dance is more than any other genre about the rhythm and the beat. The classic comparison is between a rocker just having to jump up and down to dance to his music and bang his head a bit. While dancing to hip hop involves use of the whole body, usually with some kind of simple step into it. Ultimately it's more of a core form of music because it stems from a african community which carries music high in its culture.
It's debatable whether to consider rap as singing or not, because when you brake down the words to phonetics the lines are never monotonic and form a beat or rhythm on its own. Like you would have a base line in many common music.

I like lots of songs that are not classic. But calssics win from the respect factor. Classics are what defined music and what made music what it is and that's the soul reason why it simply wins no matter what.
In any case I'm prepared to get smacked for this statement so shoot your insults after I say it.
Hip hop doesn't make sense as a musical genre. it's not music. Its a lot closer to poetry than music. Its all about the lyrics that are usually said and not sung to a beat that doesn't really change much. There is very little actual musical interpretation within hip hop.
So I myself would class it as modern poetry instead of a musical genre.
Now feel free to bash away.
that's the point of HIPHOP....it's not for people talking about money even though that's most of the songs...but the lyrical sense...for example....look a this song of Soulja Boy and skpi to the part he raps...either look up the lyrics or just try to listen to them if they're too fast then just look up the lyrics.....the lyrics make sense and he really goes hard so it's not poetry....because the definition of poetry isn't "rhymes" and youve never seen a poem wrote about how much money someone has...the poetry has a meaning not just to rhyme...they rhyme to make it sound better and that's it....I'm sure you would like a song that has absolutely no rhymes....here's the song [urlhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rmVXKxXEZWc][/url]

Dude what are they teaching you in school. All poetry is in rhymes. Usually it the rhyme goes ABAB there are also examples of ABBA or stuff like that. Rap is more the AABB type of mechanic though.
So in the first and the second line the rhyme is connected, the disconnected from the second to the third and again connected from the third to the fourth.
All such examples are done and have been invented in poetry.
@TRL okay maybe saying hip hop was a bad idea since I was referring to rap.

Exactly!
edit:A Single Kiss
Well, it is raining, and the raindrops make
Furtive areolas in the puddles of muddy bellies,
And their mists are like nebulous shrouds,
And unfertilized thoughts of maidens dreaming of
Weddings and fine bachelors in their highest high towers-
And I am warm, as down in the valley the safe cabins
Huddle against their pines like satisfied lovers,
And I read my book once more the way a captain checks
Over his ship preparing for embarkation,
For I will be published mutely and celebrate with my dogs
In the consolatory monsoons of this lush season;
For it is what I can hope for, and my smiling mother’s eyes,
And the way the doors lay sometimes half open letting
In the glows; but I cannot love her anymore, when my
Words grow tangled about my mind like weeds and skeins
Of my dead aunt’s yarn the kittens have playfully disemboweled,
For on the swings so far away she is moving in her arcs
As the policemen patrol her, and the apex where her legs grow
Up together and into the seat of a tall ladder placed below
Her window where the work is finished and she leans outwards,
Her eyes so maple and October, and she sighs never thinking
How the rain touches me, as if the kisses from cold little children,
Never once desiring her match-head, and the humming bloom
Of a single kiss.... by:Robert Rorabeck

Gah <.<
Forgot about those. Leave it to medieval japan to ruin your plan >.<
@Sucka you wouldn't name that if TLR kept quiet.
EDIT: Well there are quite a few rhyme patherns in there.
I found an AA and an ABCA pattern, but its to random to be considered legit. So its my loss I guess.

I never paid much attention to class when we went over poems and all that. For some reason reading anything related to stories or poetry makes me fall asleep in a matter of minutes. You can imagine how that affected me in class ^^;
So I avoid it like the plague.
Quite contradictory seeing as I'm participating in the fight club on the Earth Special Forces forum ^^
Though its one heck of a cure for insomnia ^^
