Thank lloyd for google.
Now the bigger a soft brush you use, the bigger the surrounding fade will be. This fade transitions the different colors into each other.
I can see you're painting something similar as acaryus. Looking at his ref though you have all colors that are less intense (saturated) probably because you're painting at 30%.
If you're laying down the base colors you can go ahead and use 100% I forgot to mention that.
It's when you come to detailing that you use 30 or less procent. The thing behind it is, that you have 3 clicks or strokes to paint a detail before you get to the actual color you want. This almost forces you to add more detail. So the point is to keep adding layers until you get the color you picked.
Good luck!

Not bad. I remember some of the early cliff textures that were done by SV looking like this. Unless this is the style you are going for, consider softening your hard separation lines and work on the segments/transitions more. Study the reference you are using -- even going as far as to put your picture and the reference side by side to spot any little difference. This is how accuracy is created.
It's a good start!

They both are great starts.
I think Epic should have a little more contrast in his colors, kind of like Acaryus who has darker shadows and brighter highlights which gives off more the sense of boulder shapes.
I think Acaryus should have less contrast on his lines, they should merge better with their surroundings.
If you made the lines on a separate layer like you're supposed to, you can go ahead and just lower the opacity of that layer. Easy!

What you both can still add is more variation of color.
Epic's is all the same kind of greyish brown and Acaryus is all the same kind of orange, maybe a little too much orange.
Those details on yours are great Epic!
