I agree, a simple texture should work fine for the toes; modeling them would be too much extra/un-needed work.

Love the pose.
About the texture, it probably has to do with how the feet are uvw mapped. It's pretty easy to uvw map those feet, just a plane for above and under. Try learning it if you don't already.
And please don't use Paint, there's always Gimp. I would want to help you, but I want to see you try it first. I bet you can do it.
