Just MAX should be fine.
Dude, I gotta tell you that 3ds max is very hard to use without days and days of tutorials. It's the only way to meet ZEQ2-Lite quality though, so break a leg out there. It's also the most professionally used modelling software to date.

I personally find maya a lot easier to use. Less menu's to navigate.
From my experience 3ds max is usually preferred for its modifiers (good for level design) and smoothing groups.

started max today and decided to do this because I had taken a class from trl a month back or more maybe and wanted to see if I could pull it off now , its a base mesh for Ginyu head

yes trl , no I followed no certain tutorial , I just used what ever I had learned from all that I have seen including your videos , and I also attended an institute where they offered a short 3ds max course , this was a part of the mid project , I used many fire frame pictures to actually see the poly flow , after many re-tries and with major help from Ramunas I was able to nail it , it was a pretty beautimus love at first :p
