Sorry to say this, but .tk sites are considered unprofessional. If you want to make a name for yourself then you need the following .com, .net, .org or depending on what country the site is located in, the countries designated extension such as .us, .de and so on.

of course the bug 3 on the web that make you seem like a professional are com, net and org.

But in the end you are still paying for that .com domain you are using so why bother making yourself look less professional and simply stick with it.

Well if you buy to us domain than okay Very Happy
If peoples can't make money from the website, than they use free way(free blog forum etc), that's why its a good choose to make smaller website address.

If you make a site for game celeb news, than you need adverts and..'be a professional member! or vip!" thing.
In FTP pirate sites no need because the guests pay for download anyway.. Very Happy

Well your initial post was about using the .tk site as a redirect to "shorten" the name of the .com one

As for the fact that .tk sites are free, everyone with at least enough knowledge of how to work HTML will already know about that. Its also a fact that .tk sites are easy to hack and offer very little in terms of function support. Going for free stuff, its better to use google sites since they are securer, though they do lack some features. But if you are a beginner, they are perfect as you don't even need to know how HTML works to get one running.

that's what you think. If you are using the .tk domain as your main site (along with their webspace to host your site) then its pretty easy to hack. As for why people would do that.

For fun in case of some people, to spread a virus for others. Simply hack into your .tk site, upload the trojan, keylogger and set it to be downloaded to any visitor. Then simply wait for feedback. Your question why hackers would bother is like asking why hackers would bother to create a virus that spreads across the net. They get nothing from it, yet there are tons of such programs created each day, many who don't live for more than a week.

If you use the .tk site as a redirect, then your main site is as secure as the provider makes it, but the redirect .tk site itself is still voulnurable to quick edits for spreading of unwanted software.

So back at you. Do some research before you talk shi... Very Happy

Firstly, just no. Hacking into websites is considered illegal in most areas of the world, and one can easily get busted, and arrested for committing such an act, unless they know how to properly cover their tracks. Either way, cyber crimes are considered a serious offense.

Second, no computer/software/server/website/exc. is ever completely hack-proof. Just because someone hasn't done it to you yet doesn't mean they can't do it at all.

Third, websites like Google or Youtube have a much better I.T. department than smaller scale sites, and thus much better security, making them less vulnerable to attacks by hackers.(They're still vulnerable, just not as much as smaller scale stuff like your .tk thing, and they can better fix things if/when they do get hacked)

If you read my post at all, you would have seen the part where I said that they were still vulnerable just like everything else, except they have the people and tools to recover quicker than most... Also, while hackers may not care about laws, they also don't care about reasons either. They'll hack something just because they can, with no ryme or reason beyond, "it was there, and I could". Just because it's a small fan site, doesn't mean someone won't hack it "just because"...

Ah but that's exactly the point. Stuff like google and youtube has better protection compared to .tk sites that barely have any protection at all.

.tk sites would be easy pray for beginner hackers, where stuff like google would be intermediate rated. The toughest to hack would be company servers and stuff that doesn't have a public access area such as a website, and even those are can be from intermediate to pro skill level.

Hackers exploit holes in the protection of a system. And .tk sites have next to no protection at all.

Now if I knew the first thing about hacking, id just go up and prove it, but since that's not my area of expertise I can't. So if you want to know stuff about aerodynamics, flight, more general computer knowledge, mapping for Half Life or some basics of coding or modeling, then I don't have problems with it. But hacking webstes really isn't my area.

Then again the whole point of this thread was that you introduced 2 uses for .tk domaines, where:
1.) Using it to shorten your .com domain name serving as a redirect is unprofessional and just makes you look bad where you still get to pay for the .com domain itself

2.) You introduced something that everyone and their mothers who know the basics of website creation knows and has known for over 5 years now. And everyone who has any clue about web developement will tell you to stay away from .tk sites, as they lack protection and they lack support for different functions such as https and so on.

Three words. Password Cracking Software.

It's not that hard to find, either, and will easily find your password for just about anything, if used correctly. Keyloggers are the other way, all they need is for you to catch the logger from some site, and they can track anything you type on your keyboard, including user names and passwords. These are commonly used to steal account info for online games, such as World of Warcraft, as just one small scale example, but can easily be used to steal more important information, such as your online bank login info.

And that brings me to point number 1 in my previous post. Why bother using a .tk redirect when you are paying for the .com domain already.

As for how a redirect can be hacked. Simple, one leaves the redirect alone and integrates a few pieces of code to install a trojan or something similar to anyone who uses it. The fact that the free .tk domains lack safety protocols is another issue.

But if you want to find that out, you should not be asking programmers, and should instead ask webmasters.
