Cave Story is a single-player freeware action-adventure video game released in 2004 for PC, designed and created over five years by Daisuke Amaya (Pixel). It's available for Windows, Linux, Mac and PSP (I actually have it got all the weapons and almost finished the story)
The story is very addicting, and the 8-bit style gives the game a kind of cuteness, It may look like any lacking 2D game at the first stages, but its one of the hardest aventure 2D games.
The music set gets 20/20, its well placed and composed
Here are some screenshots :
Here is a little trailer that might show to the likes of ...nobody how awesome it is *intense laughter* :

Cave Story is a game I could highly recommend, actually.
If you enjoy Cave Story, you should also enjoy The Underside. It has a similar graphics style and gameplay design, but with a lot of Earthbound-influenced dialog goodness.
If your cup of tea diverges into the more ambient/atmospheric platformer types, I'd also suggest giving Within a Deep Forest or Knytt Stories a shot (the former being more gameplay based while the latter being all about atmosphere).
There's a design tour annalyzation for Knytt stories here as well if you'd like to get a breakdown of it's general effect.
Most of these game recommendations are based on their SUPERB soundtracks and general platform relation, of course.

Already knew about Knytt stories and within a deep forest, now playing The underside ^^
I'm happy to see that I share my opinion with someone about indie 2D games
