I wouldn't know about misfit 3D, I actually recommend blender 3D if you want to try out character modeling. It's a free downloadable software.
Then for a tutorial type in "blender character tutorial" in google or something likewise.
Learning to model a character isn't really something that is explained in a few forum posts. So just start with the basics. If you run into a specific problem, just post it here and we'll help you out.

No there won't, because there is no Beta 2. Everything that the developers were working on internally is available to everyone now through the SVN.
