They said it right after Super Buu transformed into Kid Buu... Goku and Vegeta also already saw Buu transformed(when he absorbed)..
And even IF Gohan was stronger then.. In several years later(5 or more) Goku just trained, while Gohan was reading books. So Trained Super Saiyan 3 is 100% stronger than Mystic When Buu turned into kid Buu they said he was just a midget and could defeat him. They were talking about that buffed Buu.

Mystic Gohan, hands down. Kid Buu is stronger than Super Buu, but weaker than Buutenks and Ultra Buu.
EDIT: Super Saiyan 3 is much faster than mystic Gohan though, more powerful beams etc.

"Brolly" was one of Akira Toriama's drawings, but the story was nothing near his plans...
Janemba? Never heard of Akira Toriama drawing it, that's defenetly NOT cannon.
Otherwise all of the movie's characters (Except Plan to Eradicate the Saiyans and higher) were made by Tori-bot

To everyone saying Kid Buu is stronger than Super Buu, NO.
And also to Mima, how can a lacking form like Kid Buu know how to use 100% of his power and a more intelligent form like Super Buu couldn't? That makes no sense.
Only the absorption of the lipid Kai made Buu weaker, which made him go into lipid Buu. But Super Buu doesn't have lipid Kai absorbed, he has the other Kai's which makes me stronger than the original Kid Buu. You can also look at Goku's reactions, when Super Buu came to life Goku was scared but when Kid Buu came they weren't as much. Goku knew he had no chance against Super Buu, even in Super Saiyan 3.
And Super Buuhan is a fusion so it doesn't count. Mystic Gohan is stronger than a Super Saiyan 3. He could have obliterated Kid Buu but that'd make for a lucky ending and Akira Toriyama was pressured to keep Goku as the main hero EVEN IF HE DIDN'T WANT TO. Goku himself stated the Gohan had the biggest potential of all the fighters.
And no Super Saiyan 3 Goku isn't faster than Mystic Gohan. Super Buu never lands a hit on him. He has much more raw power and is able to control that huge ki much better than the Super Saiyan 3 form. It's like he has mastered Super Saiyan 3.
And like I said before, Toriyama said it himself that Gohan is the strongest, why can't you drill that in your skull.

There's one behind-the-scenes story.
On Frieza Saga, Akri's intention was for Goku to die, and later on making Gohan the main character, but no, money's worth it.
Goku: Ohh! I get we use the wishes to bring back Gohan and the Others to fight Buu
Vegeta: No you fool! How many times have you saved the Earth?
Obviously Goku's unsure

It would've been better if there would be mystic Goku , he would've killed kid Buu faster.in normal forms Goku is stronger , in Super Saiyan forms Goku is stronger , then, in mystic forms , Goku should be stronger, right?
And on frieza saga I thought that akira's intention was to end Dragon Ball Z with Goku sacrificing himself for killing frieza on Namek planet .

Gohan has these hidden powers because he was born a higher ranking Saiyan than Goku, much like Brolly. So Goku would never get that strong as a mystic. The only reason Gohan's needed to be released and Brolly's didn't, is because Gohan is half Saiyan.
