This number is WAY off there are way more men. It becomes especially obvious when you're talking about games like FFXI and WoW, where the ratio of men to women is something closer to 25:1. Maybe even higher.
"Just two years ago, according to the Nielsen report, many game industry analysts wondered whether computers would be able to compete with game consoles and handhelds."
That is the dumbest thing I've ever heard. Gaming started on computers. There has -always- been more PCs than console gaming systems in homes. A majority of the top games at any given point are first person shooters for the PC. The two most popular games ever are FFXI and WoW, which are both PC games (yes, I know FFXI is on PlayStation 2 and 360, but the vast majority of players are PC).
It looks to me like Nielsen either need to: survey a larger group of people, or just stop wasting everybody's time altogether.
I kind of skimmed through the article after it was announced that:
Those taking part in the MegaPanel have a software meter installed on their machines.
The tool is currently tracking over 1,777 individual PC game titles, and with over 185,000 participants
What this tells me is me is exactly what I expect to see – women tend to engage in social activities (whether they be experiments or whatnot) more often than men. Also, I don’t know about other gamers but I tend to not want extra programmes running in the background slowing down the performance of my PC…. nor do I want personally identifiable data being transmitted to a third party.
Maybe that’s a sexist attitude to have (?) and i’m making a huge assumption, but I think women, in general, are more socially-minded and would like to contribute to something. I, as a man, tend to be more insular and to not expose myself in these ways – especially when it’s not a scientific study.
Also, how are they pulling out millions of players numbers for games when their userbase is less than a quarter of a million? Are they extrapolating? Looking at the numbers from solitaire that’s 25 women per household/tracked PC and 16 men in the 25-54 age group (if we take 185,000 tracked PCs)… upping this to 250,000 (which you can be sure they would have put a higher number if it was significantly higher) that’s 18 women and 12 men per tracked PC. Looking at the linked PDF doesn’t show any explanation as to how they get these figures… however, i’m guessing that “unique players” means that they count the same person as many times as they use the game…. which is technically incorrect and should be labelled as number of times played or unique play instances and not unique players – which, of course, corresponds to an actual human.
SO yeah THESE SITES NEED TO STOP BEING IN A FANTASY LAND AND IMAGINING THINGS

Why does gender even matter when it comes to video games and other things. People always make a big deal out of a female, performing a task better than males. In my opinion, it doesn't matter which gender is better at something because in the end we are all equal as human beings.

Well in my country I see two way.
First way, if a man start with PC, than he can became smart in this way, than he marry, make kids..and his kid/kids play on his PC, than daddy buy a PC for his kid/kids, than he share his internet with wifi or router..and that's the first story.
The second way, the dad don't care about electronic things he only can handle radio or TV and if his kid talking about video games are so cool and blablabla..than he buy a videogame console like XBOX or PlayStation 3 to the kid..
This first part not about genders, it's about who got what and why.
The second part is..well, most of girls like openable tings like, openable make-up kit, openable cell-phone and than, openable PC! Which is laptop or netbook by the way..of course there's macbook but that's not cheap. So most of girls had laptop since they like openable PC(laptop), pluus they can move it easyle since they are so weak, they can use it in other place like girlfriends house or college.
Plus, most of laptops had webcam in it, and all we know most of girls like webcam since....nevermind.
About gaming..if they can play on laptop, its mostly browser game or small game..maybe Sims.
Of course small amount of girls play with videogames(hardcore) but most of em play WoW.
that's my opinion about family usage of PC and consoles.

And indeed there should be no differences between males and females, however, I'm pretty sure that there are more guys on online games.
If they said there are more girls playing casual games such as kinect games (*starts spitting everywhere* it's true), I'd believe it, but more girls on online games such as Call of Duty wordfilter won't let me write fish, CS, WoW, etc. seems pretty, uhm... Well, I just doubt it.

And co-bloppity blip bloop means working together. The term you wanted to use (I think) was cope with.

But they CAN communicate. That's all that they were saying, I think. Computers were online capable and could not register pre-360, PlayStation 3, or Wii consoles. That's what was unattainable a few years ago.
Sure, the Xbox (Original) and the PlayStation 2 could go online, but they could not interact with computers in any way.
Current consoles can interact with computers, though.

Actually, I've seen mods of some games that allow that.

Let me just remind you that farmville and all those other facebook apps are also counted as online games.
Not only WoW and the like is counted here. Just because its games you play doesn't mean there aren't games that make women outnumber the guys in total.
Besides you'd be surprised at just how many women decide to not say they are female in online games, because they think the guys will get discomforting because of it.
