I like playing that game a lot in morning when I have my coffee and half a box smokes ritual
Once you figure how game works (and you figure it in 5 minutes) then game becomes very easy no matter what difficulty you choose..
And yes there are lucky guesses you must take every game which by my opinion makes game worser then it should be

Minesweeper is definitely not the hardest game. It's hard, and often requires a lot of luck and gut feelings to win, but is by no means the hardest game ever made.
If you want to play something that's a contender as one of the hardest games ever, try playing QWOP.
As of yet, I haven't met anyone who's managed to cross the finish line...

The original Ninja Gaiden trilogy for the NES or Ghosts & Goblins would fit that mark.
Those games are the fair kind of hard. If you want discomforting hard where the game just hits you in the balls over and over, then go play I wanna be the guy.

FC2 was quite hard actually, most people would give up after playing for 30 minutes...
Oh wait that's because it was boring as heck.

fc1 was better than fc2 , fc1 was developed by crytek and was a graphical beast of its time , game play was fun , farcry 2 was a failure
also laguna I think he was using the windows classic theme not windows 98

You sure you ain't mixing it up with crysis a bit there?
In any case none of the new games come close to the old TV console games.
Stuff like 1 life which you lost in 2 hits and no continues. That was hard. Todays games are more discomforting than hard.

I think when people discuss about games , now in 2013 they mean big games , 3D games
also discomforting/hard , it all comes down to the game getting discomforting and hitman is such game
also no I'm not mixing them up , the original first far cry was made by crytek

well crysis 3 on pc is even more superior to the so called next gen PlayStation 4 game , the new kill zone ,while kill zone still gives shiny stuff to make it look better , crysis 3 is pure realizm , though PlayStation 4 is now a pc packed in a small box , and it has a hd7850 , now if they optimize such stuff for pc where we got gtx690s and 7970s , cgi quality gaming can already be possible

Hitman is not hard or discomforting. All you need is good observation skills. The difficulty comes down to pattern memorization rather than pure reflex. Sure there are situations where you are put in a situation where you have to react fast, but in the end its all scripted with a way out presented to you on a golden plate.
Tell me when was the last time you got a "Game Over" screen in a game and were forced to restart from scratch.
You could say playing x-com on iron-man mode could fit the description, but the most difficulty in that game stands from odds stacked either in your or the AIs favor.
Having game saves is nice, but having auto saves happen every 5 minutes to make sure the player never gets frustrated with a game is more discomforting than the crappy AI and false difficulty of stacking the odds in the AIs favor.
To me recent games are more or less screaming "We as game designers think our audience is incompetent, so we have to lead them by the hand every step of the way and make sure they actually beat the story line with ease or else they won't have fun"
But to me all that makes is boredom. And just increasing enemy HP and attack power is nothing more than stacking odds which make for fake difficulty.
How about behavior patterns, make them smarter, make them move differently, react faster, change their tactics and not just buff up their stats. that's a sign of sloppy game design.
So tell me. When was the last time you felt REALLY proud for beating a game with fair odds?
Game overs are good things, iron-man is a good thing. Not being able to skip though videos is a bad thing as well as gameplay that restricts the player the the story and killing him for doing anything that isn't by the story script ^^;

I think you mean big-budget commercial games. Surely someone with a desire for games of the type you have described is an avid follower of the indie gaming scene, no?
Look no farther than Super Meat Boy if really want a more modern example of a game with a challenging difficulty curve not based on number scaling or AI reaction handicapping. No, there are no game over screens or x amount of lives, but that hardly removes from the difficulty factor on a stage-basis later on.
Aquaria, Bastion, Braid, Cave Story, Gish, Iconoclasts, Night Sky, VVVVVV, Within a Deep Forest. All games in the last decade that offer challenges based on player reflexes and/or critical thinking without overly pampering the experience.
