users keep changing there character repeatedly lagging out the server and making more and more people leave I high five them but it does nothing cause they change there ip only thing that does anything is my firewall that kicks them out after 15min cause of the high packet rates but yet that don't really do anything

You could ask Mighty for the Dragon Ball Z Server banlist. It took us REALLY long, but we exhausted all their proxies.

there are countless proxies so that's improbable

Nothing is improbable (thus the existence of the word filter). There are a rather limited number of IPv4 addresses out there. Wildcard masking your entry can take care of an entire country in one go. However, it probably would be easier just to password-protect your server or use allowlists/whitelists rather than banlists/blacklists.

Passwords have been attempted numerous times in the past. I did suggest a whitelist, but I think we've found none that would work for ZEQ2 Lite.

The only remaining choice was banning every single proxy we've found. I'm aware there might be "innocent players" caught up in the crossfire here, but the people we've targeted had numerous chances to correct their behavior and also could have just avoided coming back.

They instead chose to leave us no other way.

Its way past uncool when someone binds while insulting one of my buds, that guy dies now, you got this guy's IP?

server hosted off of linux and my firewall logs connected connections and I will not give ips out users ips for reasons,

edit: the firewall is customized by me and it logs people who connect to me

*laughing out loud* I found out who the guy who was doing it, I will talk to him I am very disappointed he did this.

They instead chose to leave us no other way.

yes, I'm now considering doing range bans, got one trouble some user keeps changing there ip to access the server, cause people like him its now illegal to change there ip to bypass bans

let me tell you a trick , keep this tab open in your browser http://whatismyipaddress.com/ip-lookup

now if you see a suspicious player binding then locate his ip with above tool . See the service tab , if it says service detected none then player is not using proxy , so you can high five him directly or range high five incase he has dynamic IP , when range banning make sure you range high five his city subnet not entire Internet Service Provider , for for example suppose player IP is 100.100.2.89 then do this banaddr 100.100.0.0/16 that way only his city subnet will be released . Very few innocent players from same IP subnet may get released but that's very few 1 or 2 hardly .

If you see service : suspected proxy device in the website above after IP locating then you are 100% sure it is a VPN , no need to range high five , just normal high five that IP.

Or I can hand you my banlist which bans most VPN used by binders .

I use to host a lot of JKA (Quake 3 based) servers, typically I'd set a max ping allowed to try and eliminate as many proxy clients joining (since proxy'ing raises the ping significantly). The downfall is you may block a lot of foreign players.

Another thing you can do is range high five players who may have a dynamic IP. Typically the first 3 numbers of their ip are the same, with only the 4th sequence changing.

If I wanted to high five a client with IP 22.33.44.55,

Instead of executing

/rcon addip 22.33.44.55

I would do

/rcon addip 22.33.44

This would high five all 22.33.44.xx ip's.

I no longer use zeq2lites high five, I use ubuntu server with webmin and the firewall so I just do

1.0.0.0/8

This is dangerous deadwalkin , you are banning many innocent players , don't high five like that , just high five the last two sequences as said by quantum , its safe like that . Never use /8 CIDR range

owell there the ones causing me to do this by changing there ip to avoid high five

and when firewalling, it's not like there going to know anyways firewall ones ip they think the server just shutdown or something

I found some what of a fix for it.
not sure if it can be done in windows but I know for linux firewall it can be.

when someone changes there modules they where sending packets over 150 so I found away to slow them down they can still do it, but it has no effect for what I can see and if there packet rate goes over 150 they will lag a little witch is what slows them down so they can only change models every 5cec or so not rapidly

edit: forgot to mention it limits people who have really bad internet as well

There is a fix for bind and model changes created by scificspirit ( Sorry if wrong Razz ) . Use it and problem of binding shall be solved , while your suggestion is also good .

yes it limits them but it doesn't stop them

and you're link doesn't seem to be working

That link did not work because of the word filter .

Oh lloyd ... change word you in the link with single character you

Link to r2 of the fix: http://goo.gl/Lyels1

Word filter seems to change the last letter of this word: "you" into "you" Wink Maybe the code tags help with links.

Also I was just about to make an update for this that allows the letters (), [] and | to be used for names. After I test that it doesn't crash the server. Reading through the code it's really tedious to find out the root problem of the crash so it's unlikely that I will find it.
Also just to be clear, these changes only limit the model and name changing rate, they can still flood the server with packets, for which I believe the flood protection is for in the engine. (Might not be turned on by default.)

Also, this is probably a record time for being a registered member and posting for the first time after so long Smile

EDIT: Seems it's fairly pointless to use the code tags since it transforms the code. But I think you can figure out the real link address.

EDIT2: Turned it into URL instead. Doesn't work either.

EDIT3: Updated the link to point to updated version (r2).

well if your setup limits and allows packet flooding then I would not be using it, I would rather use my own set up where mine limits and stops packet flooding

Of course, if that is the cause of the problem you are having. I'm just wondering why Quake's engine does not take care of this packet flood problem. Using your own method is probably the most sure way, but it just might interfere with Quake's settings. But if not, that is probably a good way to take care of it.

I was called to fix these problems, having been told the problems are the rapid model changing and colored names or names with special letters, and I did it literally.

I did not investigate if the rapid model changing was the cause of it, or possible side effects that the model changing caused, which in turn might be caused anyway despite my fixes, depending on their nature.
I have not heard directly from server hosters if my changes help with the problem, but I've heard that they do.
So, whatever works, it's good then as long as it works Smile

EDIT: And just to add, there is always the possibility of limited denial of service style attacks, which this model changing resembles a little bit, although taking advantage of the game client instead of customized programs doing it. I could try to block it from client's end, but it could be done with older client then, or something else. So I'm not sure at which point this becomes more of an overall server security issue than a game issue.

In any case, my intention is not to add such security features to the engine if it doesn't already have them. The best it could do anyway is just an automatic disconnection and ignore of the connecting IP, and I did see some comments about some protection features like that in the source code of the server.

Just checked and it seems like the flood protection features should be on in the included dedicated server config files. So it seems if all else fails, to prevent that, firewalling is the only option.

However this still leaves the name crashing, which can be caused without flooding. My fix for that is currently only a workaround, at least until the true cause is found.

I think its just cause quake 3 was made back in the 90's there was always problems with systems back then

I also had people using special charactor letters and color changes they had n o effect on anything except the rapid module change that would crash the server and server system it self, and yes aslong as it works and by the way I noticed you're name was red? why is that

edit: for what I'm seeing it doesn't really effect the settings of Quake 3

Oh, that's interesting. Maybe a difference in configuration causes the problem. That could lead to the cause of the crash on some servers.

I'm not too interested in fixing all the problems anymore though, because the problems are many, and development on this engine is more tedious than alternatives, which are already being used.
Also doing things ourselves would make us a lot more familiar with the systems involved, which helps development a lot.

Partial moderator status I assume, required to access the developer forums here. As I am or at least was one of the developers.

EDIT: Anyway, here is a new update to the fixes that was requested. Allows ()[]<>| characters to be used in names.

EDIT2: Removed link since it was pointing to old fix, updated link is in my post above.

the link is not working

update: just found out the limit thing only works if the user is using 27960 they can change there port to by pass it so I just took it off and made it for every port

edit: seen your edit above, I have experienced denial of service style attacks before I learned to stop and prevent them as well I have not had one in years
