where and if I can download Quake 3
I heard its now free..or is that just the engine?

The engine is open source, so you can download that for free.
The media ( maps/models etc ) still cost money.
So we can't hook you up with a quake 3 download link.

You could download the demo of q3, compile a new .exe from the gpl code, and plug that into the demo instead of the current one. Could run a few mods that don't rely on lots of quake 3 resources then

I could provide my old 1.5MB version of Q3. I'll just need someone to compile a clean engine release of quake3.exe (which I don't have any more).
All media/textures/resources that were legal have bene nulled out though through shaders/texture replacing, thus you probably won't be able to run anything other than a mod that doesn't rely on Q3 resources. Sadly most do (except us )
