Holy trash that's pretty amazing. I remember about this photographer-artist that used to do something like that by taking bunches of different pictures from different spots and stich them up together.

I really don't get it how this thing doesn't use up to 20 gb of ram with such hi-res pictures...

It's pretty easy to notice that most are progressively streamed based on zoom level. Also, I don't think it caches every single image into system memory. To prevent memory (disk space or system) headaches, it might just progressively load the images each time -- thus preventing client-side complications
and requirements in in lieu of more server-side strain.
I don't personally know the details though as I have yet to read up on the techniques used.
