Yup, I much prefer using Linux. Not only is it more logical to use but you have complete control, not to mention being a more comfortable development platform.

And, ewww... Windows Vista. I hope it fails horribly.

I hope it doesn't fail horriably, I'm hoping it improves on the Windows francise. I'm not the biggest Windows fan by any means but I do need it for certain tasks.
Plus with the added bonus of getting any Microsoft program for free(and legel!) I really can't complain about Microsoft.

What type of Linux do you use Alex?

My main problems with Vista are the overall steps towards DRM, as well as the bloat that'll be shipped with it. By all the reports I've read it's one heck of a resource hog, even with the spangly desktop turned right down. I want a better, more stable, more usable, more secure and faster windows, not a windows that's closer towards MS's dream of controlling what you do and not a windows which favours useless graphical enhancements over performance. I'm all for giving Vista a go, but I ain't buying it until I have to.

On this machine I have Suse linux, though I used to have an PII800 set up as a local webserver running on a slackware based set up used for the servers at the place I used to work. It died, though, so I set this up as a workstation and webserver. Beats the arse of windows any day of the week for web development, I can say that much. Over all I far prefer Linux, it's yet to give me any troubles that aren't related to me doing something wrong, it was so easy to set up exactly how I wanted and can do so much more 'out of the box' than you could dream about Windows having on a fresh install. I only wish that more mainstream developers made stuff for it and gave it more support as it runs so much better.

Give it time Alex, Linux is gaining ground on Windows, defiently in the Server department.
Currently I'm using Fedora for my Linux partition, it works fantastic.

And about Windows Vista being a resource hog then you heard correctly, defiently for the version called Windows Vista Ultimate. Currently I'm hearing for that version they are recommending a gig of ram alone.

A lot of big time programmers are really lazy now a days. Programs use to be so tightly coded, everything worked just fine but now a days codeing is as lose as Paris Hilton(I know a cheap shot at Paris Hilton isn't that hard)

Lose Fedora. And stop thinking you're leet with Linux. Didn't you know? Linux has always been a better server than Windows.

Morph, by all means I know I'm not "leet" with Linux but I do know a few things. And yes Linux has been superior to Windows in terms of servers but the computer world is realizing that now and more and more are using Linux as servers.
And why would I lose Fedora? It's a excellent version of Linux and it's what the instructor decided to use so I have to use it for labs/projects.

So how about you stop trying to talk down to me, and speak to me on equal grounds. I may be a college student but I do know a few things about Operating Systems and Networking.

No, the computer world is not realising it now. They have always known it. Stop thinking you know your way around linux, while you use FEDORA. Fedora is not an exellent DISTRO of linux. Linux are separated by DISTRO, not versions. Distro > Flavor > Kernel Version :O. I think I should know this because I've use more than one distro. I've even installed Gentoo, on my laptop.

Stop with the personal attacks or start sending private messages to eachother instead. Discussion in a civilized manner is still ok.

Ok, please explain how I'm saying I know my way around Linux? By no means have I been telling people how to use it nor which Distro to use. So how about you stop trying to make this personal just because I use Windows and Linux, while having Mandrake as my avatar.

Yeah, dude, everyone with any competance when it comes to dealing with servers has known that linux is far better for running as a server platform for ages now, it's not the server side of things which linux needs support for, it's the home user end that needs work and recognition.

Despite lacking games, linux is an excellent gaming platform, I get a better framerate out of Doom3 on this machine (with relief mapping on) than I did on my old windows machine (without relief mapping) with the same specs. Developers don't want to risk developing for linux because they don't know if there's a good enough gamer user base on linux and there's not a big enough firm gamer user base because developers aren't releasing the games. Most ID stuff, UT and a few others gets linux builds, but the majoritty of games don't.

Are we talking about a increase of 2-5 fps or huger, like 8-20?

Maybe you guys should read my post better. I know Linux is better for servers but look at the market please and tell me what you see.

http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20060222-6236.html

This shows that Linux had a 20.8% incrase while Windows had 4.7%. Unix is slowly falling behind Windows to.

I know Linux is better then Windows, as long as the computer user knows what he/she is doing. It's sad that most of computer game developers won't even take a second look at Linux because of Microsofts domination over the computer world.

All comes down to profit. More consumers = more money. Therefore it's a lot more profitable for game developers to work for the Windows OS.

Can anyone say "OFF-TOPIC"?
This thread was about alternative shells and UI customization... it ended up in an argument which linux distribution is better...
Anyway, on-topic:
What taskbar position do you prefer?
I personally prefer it to be on top, because the titlebars, toolbars, tools, absolutely everything in windows is on top... why would I bother to scrool my mouse down every now and then Razz

At the bottom. Everything that goes up eventually comes down, including the mouse cursor, why resist the obvious?

No clue about the actual numbers, but on windows it was visibly chugging often where as on this it runs quite smoothly despite having high quality graphical settings turned on.

And Addict_Designs: Revenue figures are not firm figures when you're talking about a free, open-source platform. The uptake of linux as a server platform can't be measured by reports like that due to it's untrackable availability. Given the current market state, reports of what's bought are inconsequential at anyrate as many windows servers are bought for the sole reason that the companies have been locked into using MS products for years and can't change even if they wanted.
