I tried WB5, but decided to drop it because I had a lot of issues... this is my current desktop:
Luna Element 5.05
XP-ize
Rainlendar
A bunch of custom folder icons
and it loads really quick, because there are only 13 icons on the desktop. Like 3-4 seconds afer I log in, all hard drive activity stops and I can work
@dale:
I doubt it loads fast, and for that matter redraws faster, because you have exactly 111 icons on your screen...
That's a damn resource hog, not to mention redrawing when dragging windows... *me waits for vista*

Nope, because it's all rendered via your GPU, not CPU. Actually it's quite faster than ours

Dude seriously those icons have to go, that image is like my worst nightmare... You use the same style as me, accept mines cleaner.
For me the words Desktop and Icon should never come into the same sentence, and forget custom themes from the get go, I don't dare think about how many running processes you have, time to clean your machine *laughing out loud*. Yo, it's that bad I wanna do it for you.. If you keep those icons there just because you feel it's easier for you to find your stuff, make a new folder call it Shortcuts cut and paste all your desktop icons into it, then cut and paste the folder itself into My Documents. Left click the start bar click "toolbar" then click "new toolbar" direct it to your shortcut folder, then all your icons will be loaded into that toolbar. Like if you look at my desktop I have a "Games" toolbar, everything else I need is in my start menu, I've also got keyboard shortcuts for my most used progs, and ofcourse a nice clean desktop.
Boring yes, pretty no, responsive?? heck yeaa!!
Infact after a second closer look, you could benefit from some organization. I know it sounds rediculous but if you keep your desktop clean and your start up progs to a minimum and arrange files in an orderly fashion you and your PC will feel the benefit, it'll appear smoother to you.

Because more often than not there's a dozen windows on top obscuring any sight of the background making anything other than a plain colour fairly redundant?

My old setup from a year ago. Start menu is completely empty as well. I've went iconless for the last 6 months or so (nothing on desktop, start menu, or even extra toolbars). Since I formatted recently, I've yet to rig up a good/clean setup.

If all you do with your PC is gaming, chatting, and design; Linux probably isn't a solid option.
Sure there are a few Linux game counterparts. Sure you can always grab gAIM for chatting (it's a fair application). Sure there's always Gimp and Blender.
In the end though, you aren't going to be able to compare to the industry standard tools you use now.
